Julian Aurelius Sedgwick
Julian Aurelius Sedgwick
Born in East Kent in 1966.
I sold my first oil painting aged 11 and have been experimenting with oil, charcoal, drawings and woodcuts ever since. Largely self-taught, but inspired and encouraged by my father who knew a good line when he saw it.
Education: Kent and Cambridge University, where I read Oriental Studies and Philosophy.
Between 2002 and 2007 I travelled extensively in Japan, satisfying a lifelong fascination with the country, its art and philosophy - and training in Japanese woodcut techniques.
I currently live in the Fens. My subjects largely drawn from there, from Japan and from mid-Wales. I am obsessed with the way that certain lightfalls can induce sensations of mystery and yearning.
I work with the old-tech materials - love the raw line of charcoal, the plasticity and texture of oil paint. I am also very interested in the therapeutic and mindful qualities of working from life...
